At Chambers + Chambers, we’ve long been inspired by Marin County’s extraordinary legacy of modernist residential architecture. Nestled just across the Golden Gate Bridge, Marin remains one of the richest concentrations of California Modernism in the world—from the redwood-clad mid-century masterpieces of the postwar era to the bold, site-sensitive homes we design today.
After World War II, Marin’s dramatic topography, abundant oak and redwood groves, and proximity to San Francisco attracted architects eager to explore a uniquely Californian way of living. The result was an exceptional collection of Second Bay Tradition and mid-century modern homes that continue to influence our work decades later.
Low, horizontal volumes, expansive glass walls, deep roof overhangs, and a seamless integration with the natural landscape became the hallmarks of this era. Driving through neighborhoods like Kent Woodlands, Ross, and San Anselmo today, you can still experience the quiet power of redwood post-and-beam structures that appear to float above steep hillsides or nestle gently into oak-studded clearings.
The design principles pioneered at Sea Ranch in the 1960s—wind-sheltered courtyards, weathered wood siding, shed roofs, and a deep respect for the coastal ecosystem—resonate strongly throughout Marin County. Those same ideas continue to inform our contemporary projects, whether we’re working along the Inverness ridge or on the sun-drenched slopes of Tiburon.
The past fifteen years have seen an exciting renaissance of modernist residential architecture in Marin. At Chambers + Chambers, we’re proud to be part of this new chapter—creating homes that honor the county’s mid-century DNA while embracing 21st-century performance, technology, and lifestyle.
Our current work reflects several defining characteristics:
Explore some of our recent Marin projects:
Marin is home to more than 600 Joseph Eichler homes—the largest concentration outside San Mateo County. Neighborhoods such as Lucas Valley, Marinwood, and parts of Terra Linda remain some of the best-preserved mid-century modern tracts in California. We frequently collaborate with Eichler owners on sensitive renovations that preserve radiant heat, atrium entries, and globe lighting while introducing contemporary kitchens, expanded openings, and sustainable upgrades.
A self-guided tour is one of the best ways to understand why this county continues to captivate architects and homeowners alike:
Marin County never followed trends; it quietly defined its own strain of California Modernism - one that is introspective, rugged, and inseparable from the landscape. Six decades later, that spirit is alive and evolving.
At Chambers + Chambers, we’re honored to carry this legacy forward - designing homes that disappear into the redwoods one moment and frame expansive views the next.
